SPINNING

All the posts published.

You might not know the one…but I have been waiting for it since April of last year…my new Pocket Wheel is in the next batch which begins production on March 4th…isn’t it exciting? Of course, I replied right away and committed to an all Cherry package. That means all of the wood on the wheel will be Cherry. The other wood available at the intro price is Maple, and my …

It is still 2016 for a few more hours and I am sitting at work. There were a few ends to tie up, and any hours I work when we are closed during the holidays, I take as comp time in the new year. This is how I am taking a week off to go to PLY Away 2. So it isn’t totally horrible to be at work on NYE …

This book just arrived and of course I started reading right away. Just a few pages in, one of my favorite topics was addressed, time. Yes! You have the time for most anything!! You just might need to be viscous in your priorities… “Spinning, like every other skill, develops from a mixture of knowledge and experience. The knowledge is won through study; the experience through application. Knowledge may be found …

First come the ingredients. The darkest blue is actually deeper and more teal than it looks here. It is some roving that I acquired, I think as a prize at a fiber retreat. It is Prime Merino Silk from River’s Edge Fiber Arts, 65% Merino, 35% silk. The colorway is called All Spruced Up. The lighter blue toward the bottom is 100% Tussah silk from Sweet Georgia and is mostly …

I sat down this morning for a little spinning wheel time. My mom fell and broke her hip a few days ago, and it is my version of prayer… On the bobbin, I had all the samples we got in the PLY Away goodie bag, and as I finished them, I added little bits of fluff that were sitting on the side table.I still don’t have a full bobbin, and …

The month started out with the DFW Fiber Fest, during which I helped Yarnorama in their booth. It was great fun, hard work, and honestly, an easy intro to the vending side, if by easy, you understand I mean totally not my responsibility. I was helping out and in the booth most of the festival, but also did plenty of shopping and general scoping it out. I did not do …

Is it any surprise that I am still spinning? I have been trying to spin every day, at least half an hour, but most days it is much more. This bump of roving is my last from Taylored Fibers in Quilcene, Washington. I went there as part of the Jefferson County Farm Tour in September 2014. My first experiences with Barry’s fibers was on a spinning retreat with Judith MacKenzie …

So this past week or so, my internal clock says it is time to get up at 4:30…I have decided, in the name of productivity and starting a new business, that it’s a good thing, and I am going to ride the wave… So frequently, people say they have no time for xyz…People! Time is all you really have!! Rather than toss and turn until 6 or so, I decided …

Last week, my friend Martha came for a fibery visit. We washed most of this Blue Faced Leicester fleece, Gabby, a ewe from Aniroonz Sheep Company. From their website, “ANIROONZ is a specialist sheep farm dedicated to the passionate pursuit of beautiful wool and happy sheep!” What’s not to like about that? Gabby’s fleece was 2 pounds and I am guessing we washed up half of it. Once it dried …

A few years ago, I was handed a sample of a luxury blend to spin. It was Merino-Muga silk, Yak down, and while I am not sure of the proportions, I am sure it was lovely, so I bought a couple ounces of it. For any readers that know of no such spinning nonsense, it is easiest to spin blended fibers of similar length. Merino is fairly common and is …

To the left is a scan of 2 batts I made with all my recent fiber waste. I brought them in to work this week to spin up on my Kundert drop spindle. It has 3 shafts, so I could spin and go, and hopefully figure out how to best ply the singles together. I have finished the darker batt and am about half way through the lighter batt. …

I have been intending to enact fleece washing Wednesdays for quite a while now and today seems just the right Wednesday to begin. My intent is to wash all the fleece I have before acquiring more. In the grand scheme of stashers, I really don’t have very much. I think there are 6 different fleeces, all 4 pounds or less. I will wash on Wednesdays, be it one batch or …

In between the work I have to do today, I have been knitting a few stitches here and there on a scarf that I have knit a time or eight before, the Traveling Woman, by Liz Abinante. I don’t know what it is about this pattern, but there is something very soothing about knitting it that turns me toward total relaxation. My brain engages, but it isn’t terribly complex. There …

We lead a pretty quiet life to most people’s standards, sometimes bordering on hermit status. However, lately, I have felt a bit caught up in the whirlwind effect. My mind seems to be flying from one thing to the next in rapid succession. It isn’t overwhelming, but it seriously needs to slow down a bit. Two weeks ago we had company which was a treat. Then last week I was …

Not really, but it sure seems like it. I have been working on my Color Affection and will evaluate it tonight. It might be nearly done. From reading the pattern, I thought that the short row section went all the way to the second side, but having seen a few finished (and correctly) versions in person, I now know it doesn’t. I need to check and see if mine looks …

In my last post, there are links to images that were the inspiration for the yarn I just finished spinning. On my new spinning wheel (more on that in a future post). Here is the finished yarn all spun up. Crappy images as I forgot the camera and have just scanned them in an effort to get a post up. This is my before and after compilation. The multi color is Figs, …

I can’t believe I haven’t posted here since January. That’s pretty pathetic. Many projects have come and gone and are now forever in the ether. At least in my ether though they happily reside in someone’s reality somewhere, but there is no way I am even going to try to cover lost ground. It’s just lost. About an hour ago, I got my juice that I made this morning out …
